How We Emerged

Erin Prendergast, RN, graduated in 1988 from Loyola University of Chicago with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications and Marketing.  She worked for Bank of America in the marketing department for four years.  During that time, she discovered that her true calling was to nursing and graduated from Baylor University with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1994.

The majority of her nursing career has been at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas.  She was hired as a student nurse extern in 1991 and has worked in various departments throughout the hospital.  Her current position at the Women’s Diagnostic and Breast Center, which she has held since March 2007, has allowed her the unique privilege of working with a highly skilled group of radiologists, radiology technologists, diagnostic medical sonographers and other registered nurses.  This facility has been designated as a center of excellence by the American College of Radiology and was the first center in North Texas to offer 100 percent direct full-field digital mammography.  Radiologists on the medical staff have access to some of the most advanced tools available in the detection of breast cancer.

One of Erin’s nursing roles at the Women’s Diagnostic and Breast Center is to ensure that the process of having a diagnostic workup for changes seen on an annual mammogram is as pleasant as possible.  It can be a very anxious experience and the nurses at the breast center strive to balance nursing expertise with compassionate care.  Recently, with the help of the Texas Health Presbyterian Foundation, she donated her photography that is currently on display in one of the breast biopsy rooms.  It features the miraculous stages of the lifecycle of a monarch butterfly; egg, caterpillar, chrysalis and…finally, the beautiful monarch butterfly.  The words inscribed at the top of the frame from an unknown author are “Just when the caterpillar thought the world was over, it became a butterfly”.  This sentiment sums up her message to patients; that they will come out of this experience with a new found ability to have HOPE even in the midst of a devastating diagnosis like breast cancer.

Erin is also a certified Dallas County Master Gardener and voluntarily teaches butterfly gardening to children and adults alike as part of her role as a master gardener. On Butterflies Wings was founded by Erin Prendergast, RN, Women’s Diagnostic and Breast Center at Texas Health Presbyterian Dallas. By combining Passion for butterfly gardening and Compassion for her patients, she is helping bring HOPE to women with breast cancer.

Donations will directly benefit the new cancer center and the breast care program at Texas Health Presbyterian Foundation and the breast care program at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas through the Texas Health Presbyterian Foundation. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of her products will also benefit the new cancer center. By supporting On Butterflies Wings you, too, can help this organization take flight.

Other products are being developed and will be available for purchase at a later date.
